This report presents information to help states include a tire inflation check in their existing and planned inspection programs. It has been estimated that as much as 515 million gallons of gasoline are wasted in the United States each year due to improper tire inflation. Tire inflation if added to a state motor vehilce inspection program would help motorists increase vehicle fuel economy and reduce tire wear as well as improve safety. States adding tire inflation to inspection progams would be able to reduce the effective cost of their programs.
