Assessment Topic

Excess nutrient loads especially that of nitrogen are responsible for a variety of adverse consequences to the health of estuarine and coastal water. These effects include toxic and/or noxious algal blooms such as brown and red tides, low (hypoxic) or zero (anoxic) concentrations of dissolved oxygen in bottom waters, the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation due to light reduction by algal growth and fundamental shifts in phytoplankton community structure.
