Under the authority of the Solid Waste Disposal Act (SWDA) of 1970, as amended by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 ahd the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments (HSWA) of 1984, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the generation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. In 2006, EPA proposed and sought comments on new regulations pertaining to the generation of hazardous waste by laboratories at colleges and universities.
