Human Health Benefits of Stratospheric Ozone Protection.
Stratospheric ozone protects the biosphere from potentially damaging doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Depletion of stratospheric ozone, caused by the release of man-made ozone-depleting substances (ODS)--such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, methyl bromide, and hydrochloroflourocarbons (HCFCs)--could lead to significant increases in UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, which could in turn lead to adverse human and animal health effects, as well as ecosystem impacts.
